The Wine Thread.
by Open mind inif you enjoy a glass of vino now and then, tell us what you like and how your tastes got to where they are now.
wine snobs & non-snobs alike welcome!.
my intro to the world of wine was my jw parents buying a huge screw-top bottle of paul masson or gallo red or white, having half a glass, and sticking it out on the back porch thinking that wine stayed good like that.

"House" TV Show: Did I Just Hear a '1975'/Witness Reference !!!??
by metatron ini'm starting to think i hallucinated this!
house picks up the 'bi" babe from prison.
she stops the car to go to a door and he wisecracks, 'i didn't know you were a jehovah's witness'.

Wifey and I just about spit up a really good Pinot Noir when they said those lines.
House is good skeptical medicine for one-the-fence JWs.

Heads up, the Local Needs part this week is a special talk on blood transfusions.
by miseryloveselders ina brother called me to ask who was delivering the talk at our hall.
i didn't know what he was talking about.
he then explained to me that this week, for the local needs, congregations across the us will have a brother deliver a special outline on blood transfusions.. .

There was one little ray of "new light" in this talk that my wife and I picked up on.
pirata said this bit earlier in the thread:
"If a doctor says that he cannot guarantee he will not give blood, but will do his very best to avoid the use of blood, then it is okay for the parents to accept the treatment..."
This talk said that the JW parents should get the doctor's agreement in writing.
WTF?
That was new to us.

When going in Street work who left mags at laundry mats?
by foolsparadise inwe would go to laundry mats and leave magazines for people to read and actually count them as placements.
the funny thing is there would already be watchtowers in the laundry mat so we would just take them and leave ours and still count them.

If the mags already there were REALLY old (completely subjective of course) or were in bad shape (common enough) local BOE policy was to remove them and put nicer, newer ones in their place. And of course, count the new "placements".
Then there were the laundromats that had expressly asked the local JWs not to leave anything. The hard-core pioneers would actually cruise by the "forbidden laundromats" and see if any of the less-informed/less-obedient JWs had left anything. If so, they would remove them. All while counting their time.

...Japan plans to Dump 11,500 tons of Radioactive Water at Sea...
by OUTLAW injapan plans to dump 11,500 tons of radioactive water at sea.. .
pacific asian press.
tokyo: japan plans to dump 11,500 tons of radioactive water at sea to free up storage space for more highly contaminated water at its crippled nuclear plant, the plant's operator said on monday.. .

First off, I agree with OUTLAW that it's not a good idea. Dilution is a very poor solution for pollution. It's not something you would plan to do ahead of time and say, "Hey, no biggie, it's a great big ocean out there."
But to help show just how big the numbers are, visualize it this way. (If I've messed up on my conversions or calcs, someone will surely jump in.)
Think of the 11,500 tons of slightly (sure wish we knew what "slightly" meant) radioactive water as a cube. How big? 71 feet per side. Now dump it in the ocean and assume it gets fairly well mixed within a short period of time. How big of a cube of ocean water would it take to dilute the 71 foot cube down to one part per million (ppm)? 2.7 cubic miles. That's not a very big piece of the Pacific Ocean. BTW, I'm not saying that there's anything magical about 1 ppm. It's just a fairly common reference point when looking at environmental pollution.
Please don't take what I say lightly either.
I've read the Awake! magazine for decades.
(Insert OUTLAW's dog here.)

Has anyone left still believing it was the truth?
by FollowedMyHeart init seems that most xjws have left because at one point in their jw life something happened that made them start to think something wasn't right with the religion.
when i left, i still believed the jws had "the truth".
i was dying inside, trapped and unhappy (another poster's words, but describes exactly how i felt).

My brother left thinking it was God's Organization and that he was going to die at Armageddon.
He battled his homosexuality for many years before deciding to stop repressing his sexuality. During his first year in "Satan's World" he would witness to other people because he thought the JWs still had the truth. He thought he was just somehow messed up by God and would have to pay with his life at Armageddon. After a year being out of the Org, the lights started to come on.
Best regards,

Nickolas: "It was, in a word, orgasmic."
First time I've ever heard that word used to describe a wine. Must have been pretty spectacular.

ohiocowboy: "Silly Botzwana, don't you know by now that it is racist if a White person mentions the race of the perps? In our day and age, only non-whites can do it and still be politically correct."
Do you REALLY need an explanation of why Botzwana's remarks were racist?
Shaking my middle-aged, white man head and walking away.

Yeah, too bad they weren't white guys. I'm fine with white robbers.
